Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
got some high build primer now so will get some rough areas filled and sanded on the splitter this week.
i wanted a peloquin limited slip diff but there are no uk sellers of it now, that i know of, so it might have to be the quaife lsd instead. will be ordering in the next couple of weeks.
treated myself to a new bumper and rubstrip (both primered) and a drivers side wing (brand new and painted to order) the other night, should have them in about a week. then i'll need to find funds to get the bumper painted.
the car should be looking a lot better in a month or two. looks like i might be attending crail on the 30th without a splitter on though, so will be looking pretty rough.

crail was good fun, a bit cold and slightly damp but i still bettered my previous times by 0.4 seconds. still really crap times, the car will do a lot better. only managed a 15.058. my 60ft (launch) times are terrible
on the way home i bought some leon FR seats as my current seats have a massive hole in the drivers seat. no pics of them yet but i got a new gearknob/gator with them...

15 secs sounds promising mate if the car isn't even sorted yet. I'm sure you will get that down much further once mapped and you nail those starts. Damn, I was passed today by a new Audi S3, was quick. Makes me want to go buy my turbo kit now.

go on then, you know where to buy the kits...

Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
wow, its been a while since i was on here!
since last time i was on i've managed a 1/4 mile time of 14.2 without much done except the charge cooler was pumping water that day.
the car has been off the road a few months now. engine out. completely stripped for a re-build and the charger is up from 8psi, to 10psi.
will be at least another month before it's back on the road. the engine needs to be sent to england to be balanced, the gearbox is away getting the LSD and longer 5th gear fitted and im currently cleaning the bay, re-wrapping the engine loom and painting the manifold, charger, exhaust manifold heat shield and the rocker cover.
i might put some pics up later.

Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
You fancy doing mine Inzor?
I need to take the head off mine and port polish it and replace gasket as minor oil leak.
I'm sure after you have done your work you will be well down in the 13's.
Looking forward to your next update. In the mean time I am still saving for my turbo/supercharger.
Still undecided which route I am taking.

Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
i'll do it for a packet of bourbons and a cup of tea
Andrew ALD on uk-mkivs.net did my head. It doesn't look like something i'de want to diy.
if you do get it ported, you'll have to replace all 24 of the studs that hold the cams in.
I might have a spare set of head studs you can buy off me. cant remember how much they cost but get a price off of tps and you can have mine for £10 less than they want, posted. I bought them then decided to look into an ARP kit.
turbo will give more power but you would probably have to forge the bottom end and run de-comp pistons straight away.
superchargers are simpler, less to go wrong and you don't have to forge anything or de-comp till you go up to 14psi.

Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
the block is now away down in Dundee for a bore out from 81.0 to 81.5mm. it'll be back in a week.
the gearbox is open and away to the machine shop to get the rivets holding the diff to the crown removed. it should be back with the LSD and longer 5th gear fitted at the end of the week.
still no word from ARP about a head stud kit that'll fit.
air con is out, making the bay tidier and saving 11.25kg.

Just off to the shops to get a packet of bourbons then
How long will your V5 be off the road? What you driving round in the meantime?

Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
What new comp ratio have you chosen? you don't want to go too low with these radial chargers as they cannot compensate for pressure loss like a turbo can. They will work ok but you may have more lag as the motor will act like it has 300,000miles of wear on it until you reach high revs where the bigger boost is. Are you running stock cams also?

Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
I didn't choose the comp ratio but I got sent 8,5,1. which sounds quite low tbh. lower than a 1.8t uses...
I have been told that I can advance the ignition timing in the lower revs more with the lower comp, im not sure how much difference that would make though.
stock cams but I do find myself thinking about uprating them from time to time. would you recommend it?

Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
Cams will work well at the top end and make it feel stronger when it has boost but will lose even more at low revs and slightly rougher idle so its up to you. The tuning parts like cams, head porting, free-flow manifolds are great for aspirated tuning but don't work quite the same on charged engines. Turbos are different again as the power is further up the revs the bigger you go with the turbo

Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
your stock comp ratio was 10.8:1 so could have gone to 10:1 or 9.5:1 but it will be good to see what its like as your also upping the displacement to 2352cc

Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
ok cool, I wont bother with the cams then, already running ported head and ported exhaust manifold. don't want to lose any more bottom end power, which the low comp might do anyway.
good thing I plan to up the boost again at some point, maybe 14psi but I think belt slip becomes a problem at that level, so will see what happens.
the slightly higher displacement might help a little, but it is only about 24-28cc, so if I did my sums right, will only gain me 3bhp at 10psi (0.8bar)

Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
been out and got a quote to powder coat my charge cooler, alloy charge/intake pipe, rocker cover and strut brace.
£80
quite happy with that. just need to decide on the colour as they don't want to do the rocker in the silver I want as it would need lacquer but that might crack after a while.
any suggestions? not wanting them too bright.

Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
you could do a satin silver or satin black? Your charger is in matt black so it would be slightly more shiny

Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
im really not sure TRD, I don't want the whole bay to all merge into a couple of tones of black, but I don't want big bling. im guesing a satin silver wont have laquer, so all the parts can be done the same?
I thought about doing the charger too but didn't want to split it and risk leaks when it goes back together.

Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
you will be fine splitting it, your confident enough to fit new pistons, the housing is easy. It has a huge o-ring seal on the back plate so it will be fine. make sure you mark the orientation and it has to come off dead straight so the impeller blades don't touch the housing. you could use 3 or 4 wooden clothes pegs as drifts around the outer casing..

Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
im not fitting the pistons though...ive got a local specialist to re-build the engine, something I didn't make clear earlier and instantly felt guilty about it lol.
another concern is that the powder coat on the charger would keep heat in, would that effect the impeller blades or oil?

Re: inzors charged V5. stripped for re-build and forging
the charger should be powder coated already, it is a tough paint finish basically and will have no effect on the performance. If it is only painted, it was a money saving thing.
